The Christianity of Xmas
I grew up with the phrase Merry Xmas. My mother always used the term Xmas to refer to this joyful frenzy we call Christmas. Many years ago, I innocently sent a holiday salutation to several friends that included “Merry Xmas” at the end. The response of one individual shocked me. It included ridicule and ranting over the evil and devilish commercialism that attempts to choke the true spirit of Christmas. Admonishments of not removing Christ from Christmas left me feeling quite foolish and guilty. “I didn’t mean to” was my only feeble excuse. Recently my wife put together a small display concerning how Christmas is celebrated in Greece. She discovered the most interesting fact concerning the X in Xmas. X is a common abbreviation for Christ and its usage can be dated as far back at 1021 A.D. Xmas may not be as anti-Christian as some might think. You can read more about Xmas on Wikipedia.
